ANNOUNCEMENTS/CONGRATULATIONS

  • Dr. Adam Birkenheuer received the Andy Quattlebaum Distinguished Chair of Infectious Disease Research.
  • Dr. Megan Burke passed the ECC boards and is now a diplomate of ACVECC.
  • Dr. Greg Lewbart was elected as the 2021 Fellow of the Year for the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Dr. Greg Lewbart was accepted into the NC State Global Education Institute.
  • Dr. Kathy Lunn received the 2021 Academy of Educators’ Faculty Educator Award.
  • Dr. Kate Meurs, Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, was named the Interim Dean of the CVM.  Dr. Meurs begins her term as Interim Dean on January 18th, 2022.
  • Dr. Shelly Vaden was appointed to the International Renal Interest Society Management Board in October.
  • Dr. Amanda Ziegler was awarded Poster of the Distinction at the FASEB Gastrointestinal Tract XIX Conference, August 3-4, 2021.
  • Emily Hellstrom, DVM and CBS PhD Candidate, has been awarded the 2021 AAEP EQUUS Foundation Research Fellow Scholarship (only one per year!)
  • Emily Hellstrom, DVM and CBS PhD Candidate, and Kayla Harrower, Comparative GI Lab Undergraduate Research Assistant, each received a Trainee Award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Gastrointestinal Tract Conference XIX.
  • Dr. Drew Koch, PhD Candidate and T32 Fellow, received the AAEP Past Presidents’ Research Fellow from The Foundation for the Horse.
  • Dr. Anna McManamey was a 2021 ACVIM resident research abstract award winner for her ePoster on Population Pharmacokinetics of Oral Pimobendan and its Metabolite in Dogs with Myxomatous Mitral Valve Degeneration.
  • Dr. Elizabeth Rose passed DACVP boards in August 2021!
  • Patricia Baez-Ramos (veterinary student), (mentor – Dr. Liara Gonzalez), received the Colegio de Medicos Veterinarios de Puerto Rico scholarship.
  • Dr. Rosemary Bayless received the DR. Monica Menard Award for Excellence in Veterinary Pathobiological Research at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Haleigh Conley, graduate student in Dr. Katie Sheat’s lab, won first place in the RTP Drug Metabolism Discussion Group student symposium.
  • Kate Fiebrandt received the DoCS Sarah Joyner Memorial Staff Excellence Award.
  • Kaitlin Daly (mentors – Drs. Laurianne Van Landeghem and Jody Gookin) received honorable mention for her oral presentation at the CVM’s Annual Litwack Research Day.
  • Kaitlin Daly, Dr. Laurianne Van Landeghem, Stephen Stauffer and Dr. Jody Gookin received top honors for their image titled, Neurochemical Coding in Canine Gallbladder at the CVM’s Annual Litwack Research Day.
  • Gail Druley received the Phyllis Edwards Service Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Gilad FeferDr. Natasha Olby’s postdoc, is moving into the neurology residency program at the CVM.
  • Ankita GuptaMary Beth Hannon, Dr. Duncan Lascelles received top honors for their image titled, Life Below Zero at the CVM’s Annual Litwack Research Day.
  • Drs. Kimberly Hallowell and Erin O’Neil received the Best Large Animal Intern Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Caitlin Hepp Keeney received the House Officer Diversity & Inclusion Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Drs. Emily Javery and Kristen Verdoorn received the Best Small Animal Intern Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Michael Kato received the Best Small Animal Resident at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Jourdan McPhetridge received the DoCS Postdoctoral Scholar of the Year Award.
  • Dr. Cecilia Schaaf, PhD Candidate (mentor – Dr. Liara Gonzalez) received top honors for her oral presentation at the CVM’s Annual Litwack Research Day.
  • Drs. Susan Shapiro, Ellen Sherrick and Rachael Camiener received the Your Chance Medical Oncology Resident Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Courtney Sparks received the DoCS Graduate Student of the Year Award.
  • Kier Way (mentor – Dr. Michael Nolan) received top honors for his oral presentation at the CVM’s Annual Litwack Research Day.
  • Dr. Kim Young received the Whynter Colinson Brownie Award – equine at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • The entire Radiation Oncology service received the Emma Rae Warner Coat of Excellence Award.
  • Dr. Hans Westermeyer was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure effective July 1, 2021.
  • Dr. Laura Nelson was recognized with the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award and received the Class of 2022 CVM Faculty Award at the 37th CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Kate Meurs was named the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Distinguished Professor in Comparative Medicine.
  • Dr. Greg Lewbart was a 2021 Outstanding Global Engagement Award finalist.
  • Dr. Joanne Intile was promoted to Associate Clinical Professor effective July 1, 2021.
  • Dr. Tara Harrison was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure effective July 1, 2021.
  • Dr. Tara Harrison was nominated for a Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teaching Award in May 2021.
  • Dr. Tara Harrison received a presidential award from the European College of Zoological Medicine for enabling online meetings in 2020.
  • Dr. Tara Harrison, along with collaborators at the MSU and Potter Park Zoo, received the 2021 Distinguished Partnership Award for Community-Engaged Research at the MSU Outreach and Engagement Awards Ceremony.
  • Dr. Karyn Harrell received the Class of 2021 CVM Faculty Award at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Margaret Gruen was reappointed to Assistant Professor for a second term.
  • Dr. Liara Gonzalez received the Goodnight Early Career Innovator Award.
  • Dr. Liara Gonzalez was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure effective July 1, 2021.
  • Dr. Liara Gonzalez was selected as a 2020-2021 University Faculty Scholar.  The University Faculty Scholar program recognizes and rewards emerging academic leaders and scholars among NC State’s tenured and tenured-track faculty.
  • Dr. Liara Gonzalez was appointed as Associate Director of the Comparative Medicine Institute.
  • Dr. Brian Gilger received the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence at the 37th Annual CVM Awards banquet.
  • Dr. Brian Gilger was honored with a Gold Fellowship from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
  • Dr. Erin Frey was named to the university’s first-ever class of Strengthening the Impact of Research (STIR) Scholars for her work promoting effective antibiotic stewardship in animals.
  • Dr. Callie Fogle was promoted to Clinical Professor effective July 1, 2021.
  • Dr. Daniel Duffy was reappointed to Assistant Professor for a second term.
  • Dr. Sara Bennett will serve on the Feline Scientific Advisory Board for Morris Animal Foundation.
  • Dr. Rosemary Bayless was selected at the 2020 AAEP Past Presidents’ Research Fellow.
  • Dr. Anthony Blikslager was honored with an AVMA Clinical Research Award.
  • Dr. Dianne Dunning was named as one of the 2020-2021 Provost Faculty Fellows.
  • Dr. Erin Frey received her NCSU CVM – Academy of Educators Classroom Teaching Concentration and the NCSU OIED – Reflective Educational Design (RED) Inclusive Teaching Certification.
  • Dr. Brian Gilger received the 2020 Wilford S. Bailey Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University.
  • Dr. Sarah Ozawa became a diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine.
  • Dr. Olivia Petritz was recognized with a Presidential Service Award at the annual ACZM meeting.
  • Haleigh Conley, graduate student working under Dr. Katie Sheats, received the following awards: CMI 2020 Associate Member Flash Grant awardee and Society for Leukocyte Biology Video Abstract Spotlight Awardee during the 2020 SLB Conference.
  • Julie Nettifee was named the 2020 American Humane Veterinary Nurse Hero at the Hero Dog Awards special.
  • Dr. Lizette Hardie received the AAVC Faculty Award.
  • Dr. Karyn Harrell received the Class of 2020 CVM Faculty Award, Dr. Steve Marks received the Huffman Leadership Award, Dr. Laura Nelson received the Class of 2021 CVM Faculty Award, and Dr. Lauren Schnabel received the 2020 Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research at the 36th Annual CVM Awards Ceremony.
  • Dr. Kate Meurs was named Senior Associate Dean and Director for Research and Graduate Studies.
  • Dr. Thierry Olivry was awarded the ECVD Lifetime Career Award.
  • Dr. Sarah Townsend became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons – Small Animal.
  • Dr. Alix Berglund was recognized by the NIH with a Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award for her work on understanding immune aspects of stem cell therapy using the horse as a model.
  • John Freund of the Gonzalez Lab received the 2020 CVM Award for Excellence for efficiency and innovation.
  • Dr. Laura Minemma successfully defended her PhD thesis.
  • Dr. Pradeep Neupane was award an AKC-CHF Fellowship for his work in Dr. Ed Breitschwerdt’s lab on Immunodiagnotics.
  • Dr. Jennifer Niemuth successfully completed her PhD and passed the ACZM boards.
  • Andrea Thomson of the Lascelles Lab received the 2020 CVM Award for Excellence for customer service.
